This 1985 album captures Dawkins with a regular working band blasting through a set of his original tunes. The set has been remixed, putting some much-needed life into Dawkins' flabby guitar sound but still unable to get his vocals out far enough to compete with his guitar. The tunes are good, though, and the band blows in tune, giving Dawkins one of the more focused sessions he's ever turned in.
Career. Dawkins was born in Tchula, Mississippi. He moved to Chicago in 1955, where he worked in a box factory, started to play in local blues clubs, and gained a reputation as a session musician.. In 1969, thanks to the efforts of his friend Magic Sam, his first album, Fast Fingers, was released by Delmark Records. It won the Grand Prix du Disque from the Hot Club de France.
FEEL THE BLUES, certainly, does not give that ad-lib impression. I had not heard of this Jimmy Dawkins band before this 1985 record. The keyboard 'master' on FEEL THE BLUES is Professor Eddie Lusk and it is not a coincidence on more than one occasion Dawkins says aloud "OK Professor do your thing!" and an impressive organ solo follows.
