This is a boxed set of 11 CD's originally recorded during the 1940's, 50's and 60's, and well remastered digitally. The set comes with a nice book of information about both Chopin and Rubenstein and, thankfully, a comprehensive index.

On 11 discs this set contains virtually all of Artur Rubinstein's classic stereo recordings made for RCA in the 1950's and 60's. In addition there is a bonus disc, number 11, with earlier interpretations from 1946 of the Berceuse, Barcarolle and Sonata no. 2.
Arthur Rubinstein didn't believe any of that nonsense about Chopin. His respect for his compatriot informed both his interpretation of his music, and his decision to record the bulk of Chopin's piano music. This 5CD set contains Rubinstein's first cycle of Chopin's music, although it's far from complete.

For those accustomed to thinking of Arthur Rubinstein as a "Romantic" pianist, this edition of the Chopin Waltzes will come as a surprise. The pianist plays the Waltzes straight, with very little rubato and at moderate tempos. This is in marked contrast to his 1953 mono set, which was freer in tempo and phrasing. Which way is the "right" way?
